Country music and pot smoking legend Willie Nelson, along with his newly-formed 'Teapot Party', gave their official endorsement Tuesday to presidential candidate and former two-term New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson who has been a staunch advocate of marijuana legalization and the medicinal use of marijuana.
According to a press release on the Teapot Party website, Nelson decided to give his endorsement after meeting with Johnson back stage after a concert in Texas.
The result of that historic meeting is today’s endorsement of Johnson by Willie Nelson’s Teapot Party, the press release says.
“I am truly gratified to have the endorsement of such an iconic entertainer, philanthropist, innovator and champion for individual rights as Willie Nelson,” Johnson said in response to the endorsement. “Not only is he a superstar talent, he is a bold advocate for social change. Americans are demanding the freedom and opportunity to pursue their dreams without interference from a heavy-handed government, and Willie Nelson lends a tremendous voice to those demands.”
This is the first time the Teapot Party has officially endorsed a candidate. The party was formed last November after Nelson was arrested for possession of marijuana in Texas.
“The purpose of the Teapot Party,” Nelson explains, “is to vote in people who believe the way we do and vote out the ones who don’t. Tax it, regulate it, legalize it. And stop the border wars over drugs.”
