The True History of the Pothead Holiday 4/20

We were actually ready to re-launch the Chronicle about two weeks ago, but couldn't resist waiting for 4/20, the unofficial day of celebration for potheads all over the world.
There are many rumors about how the number 420 came to represent marijuana - police code for pot, the number of chemicals in weed,  and so forth - but we're going to give you the real scoop.
The 420 tradition was started by a group of northern California high school students in 1971. The group called themselves the 'Waldos' and would meet every day after school at 4:20 p.m. to smoke pot. One day the Waldos heard about a local marijuana patch that had been abandoned and decided to mount a search. They would meet every day at 4:20, smoke weed together and search for the mythical marijuana garden.
The Waldos never did find the grow site they were looking for, but began using their meeting time, 4:20, as a general code word for smoking weed or being high in general. The Waldos were Grateful Dead fans and started using the term around a bunch of Dead Heads who ran with it.
The term is now used the world over to refer to cannabis and the date April 20 (4/20) has become a day of celebration and brotherhood for potheads everywhere.
Today at 4:20 p.m., marijuana lovers all over the world will light a bowl, or joint or bong or whatever and join together in a spiritual moment to celebrate the wonderful herb that we all love so much. I hope you'll join us!
